Headlands Fog Collectors
Date: 2024
Medium: Fog Water Collection Experiments
Materials: Wood, copper, aluminum, plumbing, found objects
Dimensions: Variable
This experiment was conducted to test the fog water collection capability of three experimental materials including square copper mesh, fine woven copper mesh, and bottle brushes. The brushes mimic special adaptations used by pine trees and cacti for collecting water from the air. The clear winner was the square copper mesh which collected the most fog water over the course of two months.
This project was supported by the Center for Coastal Climate and Resilience, OpenLab Collaborative Research Center, and the Climate Action Solutions Program at UC Santa Cruz.
