Inner Life

Date: 2024

Medium: Interactive Live Sound Installation

Materials: Found drawers, reading lamps, transducers, custom electronics, and audio

Dimensions: Variable

Description: Inspired by meditative moments in nature, this installation invites visitors to slow down and run their fingers through the sand creating a playful soundtrack. Dresser drawers usually contain our belongings but here those items have been replaced with sand that has been ground down over hundreds of years in river beds, deserts, and beaches- connecting us to a deeper sense of time and creating space for personal and collective reflection on climate and desertification.

Each drawer has a microphone to detect vibrations when visitors touch the sand. Audio signals are manipulated to sound like beaches, waves, trickling water, cars on a highway, planes flying over head, and more. These effects enhance the physical experience of touching by enabling participants to create intimate collaborative soundscapes with live sound.
